The True Meaning of Love: Creating Safe, Loving and Lasting Relationships

Written by Harville Hendrix Ph.D. and Helen LaKelly Hunt Ph.D. | July 22, 2025 at 5:00 PM

Love is not a feeling, it is a verb. Love is not stagnant, nor is it guaranteed. Love lives in our behavior toward one another, moment by moment.

Love is a choice we make, again and again, to support, honor, and accept our partner fully, just as they are.

  • Love is action-based: It shows up in how we treat one another.

  • Love involves commitment: A dedication to the physical, emotional, mental, and spiritual well-being of another that is equal to or greater than our dedication to ourselves.....
  • Love is judgment-free: Love does not try to change or “fix” the other, but accepts and honors differences.

  • Love exists in “The Space Between: That sacred relational space between “I” and “Thou,” where real connection, healing, and transformation take place.

Three Stages of a Relationship

This philosophy, rooted in Imago Relationship Theory, outlines a developmental arc common in long-term relationships:

  1. Romantic Love: The blissful early stage, rich in passion but naturally unstable.

  2. Power Struggle: The inevitable conflict phase where differences emerge.

  3. Real Love: A more grounded, mature form of love that is enduring, joyful, and conscious.

What is the key to reaching real love in a relationship? Learning to view conflict as purposeful and transformational, not destructive.

The Path Forward: Healing Through Relationship

When couples transform together, they embrace five key steps:

  1. Create safety: Without safety, vulnerability—and thus love—cannot thrive.

  2. Resolve frustrations: Not by winning, but by understanding.

  3. Reignite intimacy: By remembering what first connected you—and choosing to grow together as a couple.

  4. Heal emotionally and spiritually: By using the relationship as a sacred container for growth.

  5. Build empathy: By learning to see and value the world through your partner’s eyes.

The Impact of Couples Healing in Relationships

There’s a ripple effect. When healing happens at home:

  • Children experience emotional safety and modeling of healthy love.

  • Partners bring empathy and compassion to other relationships.

  • Communities benefit from healthier individuals and more conscious citizens.

A conscious relationship is more than a source of personal healing—it is a catalyst for collective transformation. When we choose to love as a verb and to act with care, curiosity, and compassion, we create a sacred space between us where healing can begin.

When we create that space, the wounds of our past are met with empathy, not defense. We are invited to grow beyond the limits of our individual selves and into a partnership that fosters mutual growth and radiates outward into the world.

When two people learn to hold differences with love, safety, and wonder, they model what is possible—not just for themselves, but for families, communities, and our shared human future. Love is not only the destination, love is the path. And walking love together, we become the change in our world.

For 30 years, we’ve been honored to help couples in workshops and in therapy with tools from "Getting the Love you Want" and "The Space Between." We’ve worked with couples on the brink of divorce to help them transform their relationship into a spiritual journey of couplehood. This journey embraces the purpose of conflict, fosters deeper connection, and supports healthy, thriving love in all relationships.
